shopping haul

I'm starting to wonder if it's counterproductive for me to work on Saturdays. I said yes to a few weeks of overtime work in an attempt to recoup my camera and London vacay money. But what do I do? I get out of the office and start shopping ...

It's weird. I can go for weeks on end without shopping and then wham! In one day I seem to find all these things I must have. My favorite purchase of the day was this dress from Express:

It was impossible for me to zip it up without assistance, but once I got it on it fit perfectly. I love it. I plan on wearing it for one of the many days of festivities that we're attending during the London wedding. But afterward, I figured I can wear this to work with a cardigan. Perfect for those days when I've got to go straight from work to a night out. Best part of the purchase was that it was 25% off. So instead of $88, I just paid $66. Yay for discounts!

My other purchase was two sets of earrings from Aldo: green and black chandelier earrings. I only have a picture of the black ones because, well, I'm lazy. They go with everything and they only cost $18.

My last purchase was something I've been hunting down forever: a cognac-colored belt. I finally found the perfect one at Banana Republic: skinny, double-strap and studded. The most perfect part was that it actually fit! You don't know how hard it is to find a small belt in Manhattan. It's freakin' impossible. Thank you Banana Republic for stocking small belts. Thank you.

So that was my shopping haul for today. Hopefully the last for awhile, my credit card's getting tired ...

east village night

Had a fun night with the ladies tonight. It was very much an East Village date night: dinner, dessert, wine and then dancing. But enjoying it with girl friends was exponentially more stress-free and fun.

We kicked the night off at Porchetta, which is much beloved for its sandwich that envelopes unctuous chunks of deep fried pork in a crisp ciabatta roll. We opted for the porchetta plate ($14), which we hoped would be served the way Filipino restaurants serve lechon kawali—a plate overflowing with pieces of pork topped with crispy skin. We didn't expect rice and a little cup with a mixture of soy sauce, vinegar and crushed garlic on the side, but we were expecting loads of pork. So you can imagine our disappointment when we got this:

We were sad to see the plate with a handful of pork and loads of greens and beans. Three pieces of pork skin, really? Sad, sad, sad ... our spirits were lifted a little when we tasted the flavorful pork and each had one piece of crisp fried skin. But alas, this does not hold a candle to the Filipino lechon kawali, unfortunately ... The crispy potato wedges sprinkled with the burnt ends of the porchetta ($6) were very nice though, as was the fresh heirloom cherry tomato salad. A nice meal, but we were still left craving grease-loaded Filipino comfort food. Next time ...

Afterward, we walked over to Momofuku Milk Bar. Ludette and I had been talking about coming here for a long time so we were definitely excited.

Having heard so much about the soft serve ice cream, I had to have some. I picked the cereal milk flavor which uncannily enough tastes like, um, cereal milk (doh). $4.15 is a wee bit pricey for a small cup of soft serve but cereal milk is an unusual flavor to come by so I suppose it's warranted.

The revelation, though, was this cookie which is quite possibly THE best cookie I've had in my entire life:

This is the cornflake chocolate chip marshmallow cookie. Biting into it, you first experience a pleasant crunch, followed by a fun gooeyness of melted marshmallow, capped off with a beautifully chewy cookie. It's not overly sweet, even for one with a very passive sweet tooth like myself. I've never eaten more than 3 cookies in one sitting in my entire life, but if any cookie can push me over the 3-piece mark, it's this one.

For drinks we ended up at Ten Degrees, where we shared a bottle of Montepulciano and eventually this plate of crostinis:

It's a rather unexpected taste, even though you know exactly what's in it: sauteed wild mushrooms splashed with Thai chili and drizzled with coconut milk atop a crisp crostini. I'm always surprised when a non-Asian establishment serves up an Asian-inspired dish with serious heat. Lovely. Might want to have it again.

After wine, it was off to Lava Gina (yeah, we're still arguing about how that's pronounced) to listen to a co-worker's band perform and watch a roomful of couples salsa the evening away. Must definitely come back with a dancing partner next time!

In all a wonderful East Village night. Now off to sleep and *fingers crossed* wake up with no trace of a hangover. Nightey night!

keep calm and carry on

I've seen this poster numerous times in hip homes in magazines, and always liked the message. Lately though, it's been on my mind more because this store that I walk past everyday has about 5 of these posters displayed in the store window. It got me curious about where this poster came from. It turns out that the poster was commissioned by the British Government's Ministry of Information during World War II as propaganda to be posted throughout the country upon the outbreak of war. The poster was never officially issued and thus was not known to the public until it was rediscovered 50 years later at Barter Books, a second-hand bookshop in Alnwick, Northumberland. Crown Copyright expires on artistic works created by the UK government after 50 years so the image is now in the public domain. These days, the design appears not just on posters but also on t-shirts, mugs, rugs and even lounge chairs. This is a great source of products though I'm sure you could find stuff in Etsy as well. Right now, I have it as my computer's wallpaper, but I'm thinking of displaying a printout in my cube as well. It's a good phrase to latch on to on days when you're feeling utterly overwhelmed.

chocolate and bacon

Since seeing this picture today, I've had bacon on the brain.

Chocolate covered bacon is part of the bar chow at 675 Bar in the Meatpacking District. I recall contemplating the bacon-chocolate combo earlier this week, when I was standing in line at Whole Foods. I found myself staring at the Vosges Mo's Dark Bacon Bar. I thought it was totally weird at first but the more I thought about it, the better it sounded. I'm not averse to eating bacon with sweet maple syrup that's migrated from my pancakes. Chocolate could work. I'm also dying to try some of that Bacon Caramel Toffee. Those three words are just beautiful together.

The chocolate bacon martini thing at The Capitol Club in Seattle, however, may be just a bit much for me.

dip in dots

I can't remember the last time I wore ginormous polkadots, but Kate Spade is making me really consider it. The blouse-cardie-belt-skirt ensemble on the left would be such a sassy work outfit. I love blouses that tie with a bow, so sexy secretary. I don't love the $265 pricetag so much though.

Kate Spade's new apparel dropped yesterday and I love their signature mix of mod and whimsy. I think this cardie is too cute, though the price isn't at $245. Oh well. Someday my sweethearts, you too will end up on the sale rack, and I'll be waiting to swoop in.
