Whenever I'm sick, hungover or just in need of some comfort food, I head down to Koreatown for a steaming bowl of Sul Long Tang ($8.50) at Gahm Mi Oak. The soup is a milky white broth obtained by boiling oxtail for hours on end to extract the flavor. Silky strands of noodles, white rice and tender slices of beef are then added on. The soup is unseasoned when it arrives on your table. You're provided with a bowl of rock salt, some pepper, and chopped green onions so you can season the soup according to your preference. After seasoning, dig in and you'll be rewarded with an absolutely comforting bowl of soup that's full of flavor and makes you feel satisfied and restored to good health.
Before I forget, when the kimchi is brought to the table at the beginning of your meal, make sure to have some. Gahm Mi Oak's freshly made kimchi is absolutely delicious, and its recipe is so guarded that customers aren't allowed to take any of it home.
In New York's K-town, Gahm Mi Oak makes the best Sul Long Tang, so there may be a wait if you go for dinner. My favorite time to go is on a Saturday afternoon, when I'm usually recuperating from Friday night, and I never have problems finding a table. Another good time to go: before heading home after an evening of drinking (It is open 24 hours a day, after all!). Not good for the waistline, but you will feel infinitely better when you crack open those eyeliner-smeared eyes in the morning!
