Mika's plane took off for Helsinki just a few hours ago, and just like that, I am alone in New York again. He left to attend his grandmother's funeral. Mika's late grandmother, Riitta Immonen, was one of the grand dames in fashion in Finland. She's best known for co-founding Marimekko, though she later sold her shares. She preferred to design unique dresses for her clients, and became known as a coutourier to Finland's celebrities and first ladies. One of the women who wore her designs was Armi Kuusela—a name familiar to most Filipinos who remember her as the first Miss Universe who later got married and settled in the Philippines.
I did not get the chance to meet her, and I truly wish I had. Mika was in awe of his grandmother, and was always inspired by her grace and class.
