Popping my Blockbuster Cherry

One late night at a pool hall, Wendy convinced me to finally sign up for Blockbuster. I'd been ambivalent about the whole Netflix/Blockbuster thing because, well, until recently I worked so much I didn't have time to go out with friends, much less sit down for a movie. But now that my job situation has calmed down, and Summer is swiftly bidding adieu, I thought it was time.

I got my first movie in today, a movie I've been wanting to see since 2004 but somehow never got around to: City of God. Wow. It was amazing. Incredible story telling and cinematography. Fernando Meirelles has just overtaken Quentin Tarantino as my favorite director. I can't wait to see his next movie, Blindness, which is coming out on September 19. It's got a powerhouse cast: Julianne Moore, Mark Ruffalo, Danny Glover, Alice Braga and Gael García Bernal.

Alice Braga was, of course, also part of City of God. I saw her in the flesh back in November 2007. I was a little intern at Cartier's PR department and was tasked with watching over $6 million worth of jewelry during a Vanity Fair shoot (with guards, of course—I'm not exactly a force to be reckoned with). I knew she was someone special because everyone and their brother had already told me what an amazing movie City of God is. But it is only now, after seeing the film, that the awe of seeing her is setting in.

Before this shoot, I'd only had 1 celebrity sighting in New York—really sad. But boy did I boost my total up with this shoot, or what!

Can't wait to see Alice Braga in Blindness. If you read or speak any Portuguese, check out Fernando Meirelles' blog on making the movie for me cos I sure wish I could understand it!
