Why does young Coco have a French accent while Shirley MacLaine's Coco has an American accent?

So I just finished watching the movie and it was quite good. I particularly loved her scenes bickering with Paul Poiret! And did people really walk out on fashion shows back then if they found it atrocious? Wow ... I didn't realize the French were so unforgiving! If anything, the show accomplished its purpose—make me covet Chanel even more, of course!
